Lol…poor Leah.

How important do you think is that cross to carlisle? I mean, edward says that he keeps it for "nostalgia" (i don't remember exactly but i think that he said that) but i always had the impression that carlisle's cross have big meaning for carlisle

panlight:

You kinda have to take everything Edward says with a grain of salt, IMO. He’s not always totally truthful and has a habit of down-playing or underselling things. I mean again, he tells Bella that Carlisle found Esme in the morgue—which is true—but totally left out the part where they had met before. That’s a huge thing to omit.

I think the cross has to be pretty important to Carlisle. I mean he would have had to go back to get it at some point, right? He didn’t have it with him the night he was bitten, obviously. So he had to make the conscious choice to go back and take it (my headcanon is that he went back during/after the London fire and recovered it) and he’s kept it with him all these centuries later.

Like his name, it’s a link to his human past, and a link to his father. They obviously didn’t have the best relationship, but Pastor Cullen was the only family he had and I DO think it’s important to him to keep this relic. Edward doesn’t get it, IMO, because Edward hasn’t held on to his human memories and sense of self the way that Carlisle has. “Edward Masen” doesn’t seem very important to Edward, but “Carlisle Cullen” is hugely important to Carlisle. And also, as I mentioned in the previous ask, the fact that he can look at the cross and touch it and it doesn’t burn his hand or anything is something that comforts him I think. On a more petty note I think it’s partly this sort of “f*uck you” to vampirism. Like, I’m a vampire? So what? I’m also a doctor and have a giant cross in my house, being a vampire doesn’t define me.

First of all, I really like this whole idea and imagery of Carlisle and his cross. I love it a lot, I love the Christian undertones to Carlisle’s character and the conflict this means for him in terms of what he became.

However, I am also just thinking about Carlisle carting this giant wooden cross across the world, and then frequently transporting it around America. While eventually he would have used a truck to move his stuff (all those books don’t move themselves) I also have this image of him just walking across America with his cross over his shoulder like a hobo stick, a checked blanket tied on the end with his journals and spare clothes inside.
